Visitors from St Albans’ French twin Nevers crammed in a cricket match during a trip to our cathedral city.

The tourists, including Nevers’ mayor, fit the game in around tours of the cathedral, the Roman sites, and the under-construction museum at Town Hall.

They also managed a trip to the pub, the curry house, and Victoria playing field for a few overs of cricket.

St Albans mayor Mohammad Iqbal Zia said: “This was a great opportunity to show our visitors a taste of what of our historical city has to offer.

“Cricket is not played widely in France, but the mayor of Nevers was so impressed with the game, he’s now thinking of putting a team together!”

St Albans twinned with Nevers, another cathedral city dating back to the Roman times, in 1974.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
