Thousands flocked to Oaklands College’s summer fayre this year, despite a rather damp start to the day.

The event boasted a variety of activities, including horseball, lamb racing, tractor and trailer rides, donkey rides, birds of prey aerial shows and a fun fair.

The day also included demonstrations of various students’ talents: those on the Performing Arts and Music courses took to the main stage to showcase excerpts from the musical Oliver, and guests were treated to a variety of food served by Hospitality and Catering students.

In addition, the fayre featured showjumping and dressage demonstrations, as well a food court serving Lebanese and South African cuisine.

Oaklands principal Zoe Hancock said: “The summer fayre is the biggest event in our calendar and it’s one we always look forward to. It was lovely to see that the damp weather at the start didn’t stop people coming along and enjoying the day.”

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
