Local rugby players competed against each other in a charity friendly for the seventh year in a row.

Teams from Verulamians RFC, St Albans RFC, and Old Albanians RFC collected more than £550 for OLLIE (One Life Lost is Enough), which provides suicide prevention training in schools.

The event is called the Annual Father and Sons Charity Rugby Game because when it started all the players were related.

Organiser Tony Maile said: “I was delighted so many local players and supporters came out to support grass roots community rugby and a charity doing great work to help prevent teenage suicide.”

Adding: “I am very pleased with the total and we had a big turn out. We don’t focus on who wins because we mix up the teams from the rugby clubs so it’s less partisan and is more community based.”

He thanked Ross Graham for his invaluable help arranging the event.

One of my favourite summer activities as a child was pond-dipping. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house with a fairly large pond in the garden and so my pond-dipping activities often extended over days and weren’t as much dipping as a thorough exploration of the life in the pond.
