Former Labour group leader returns to district council

FORMER Labour group leader Roma Mills has regained the seat she held on the district council for 22 years after winning yesterday’s by-election in St Albans.

Roma contested the Batchwood ward by-election for the Labour party on Thursday, January 19, winning 55 per cent of votes.

The victory comes after Lib Dem councillor Amanda Archer, who had beaten her by just one vote in 2010, resigned 19 months into the job after being promoted at work to a post which did not allow her to be actively involved in politics.

David Partridge, who stood for the Lib Dems, received 22 per cent of the vote, while Conservative Tim Smith had 19 per cent and Naomi Love for the Green party secured four per cent.

A voting summary posted by St Albans district council shows there was 33 per cent voter turnout.
