IT might have been cold, but that didn’t stop hundreds of people packing Harpenden High Street to watch last weekend’s Christmas Carnival.

EastEnders star Larry Lamb, who is playing Captain Hook in the Alban Arena’s pantomime Peter Pan this year, joined Grove School pupil Aimee Gorman, 10, and town mayor Daniel Chichester-Miles on stage for the countdown to the big switch-on. Aimee was the winner of the annual competition to design a poster for the event, and had the honour of actually turning on the lights.

For a video of the event see our other Harpenden Christmas Carnival story.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
