THE AMBULANCE service in St Albans answered 44 calls during the New Year celebrations. There were a further 10 from Harpenden and five from Redbourn.

This compared to 15 calls from St Albans on Christmas Day.

The Beds and Herts Ambulance Service received more than 800 calls in total from midnight on New Year's Eve to midnight on New Years' Day. Nearly 10.5 per cent of these were to treat injuries sustained in assaults.
