Green-fingered locals can once again enjoy a long-standing charity plant sale in Markyate.

The Markyate Plant Sale has raised nearly £85,000 for The Hospice of St Francis since it was set up in 1997.

There will be a selection of perennial plants, herbs, vegetables, hanging baskets, and more than 7,000 bedding plants at the garden party event.

Patrons can also enjoy refreshments, entertainment from Quintet of Six, and a raffle.

Organiser Ian Bradley said: “We were delighted that our green fingers generated such a worthwhile sum of money for the hospice, which cares for people facing life-limiting illnesses across Herts and Bucks and provides support for families and carers. Many people in Markyate have been touched by the charity’s work and I am so pleased we are able to give something back to this remarkable community resource.”

The event is on May 26 from 10am at Markyate’s 64 High Street gardens. Entry is free.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
