DRIVERS had a lucky escape after a cow got on to the London Colney bypass this morning (Tuesday) causing a series of freak accidents.

The cow - from nearby Bowmans Farm in Coursers Road - managed to get over three fences to get onto the main road before daylight around 5.30am today.

The driver of a Mercedes Sprint van swerved to avoid it, crossed the central reservation and found himself upside down in a ditch on the other side of the road.

Meanwhile the six-year old cow was struck by two other vehicles - a Vauxhall Meriva and a Ford Mondeo - but fortunately no-one was hurt.

The cow suffered a broken pelvis and had to be put down as a result of its injuries.

Andrew Wolfe, managing director of Bowmans Farm, said: "It's very unusual for a cow to jump fences in this way but something must have spooked it. I am just massively relieved that no-one has been badly hurt.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
