Drivers were warned to expect long traffic tailbacks in central Harpenden this morning (Thursday), as a lorry had to be removed following a collision with a bridge in Station Road.

A spokesman for Network Rail said the vehicle became stuck under the bridge, and had initially caused disruption to Thameslink train services.

The incident took place at about 9.30am and motorists were recommended to find an alternative route to avoid traffic.

Efforts to free the lorry from the bridge including an attempt to deflate the tyres.

Network Rail engineers were called out to assess the rail bridge and trains were running at a reduced speed for safety reasons.

Services were delayed for up to 10 minutes but returned to normal by about 10am.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
