Theft of 30-year-old statue with “sentimental value”

A STATUE of famous comedy double act Laurel and Hardy has been stolen from the Sopwell area of St Albans.

Herts Police are appealing for witnesses and information following the recent thefts of the statue and a gnome in Sopwell.

A police spokeswoman explained that the statue of Laurel and Hardy sitting on a bench was removed from the front door of a house in Watling View between 6pm Tuesday January 31 and 8.15am Wednesday February 1.

She added: “The statue was over 30 years old and was of huge sentimental value.”

Then between 10am on Friday February 24 and 2pm on Sunday February 26 a statue of a gnome was stolen from the front garden of a separate house in Watling View.

Anyone with information about either crime or has knowledge of these items being for sale is asked to contact PC Ben Kirby via the Herts Police non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You do not have to give your name and could be entitled to a cash reward.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
