Harpenden Knickers Model’s Own star releasing book following success of social media campaign
A Harpenden internet sensation has been photographed by a world-renowned fashion photographer for a book about her successful charity campaign.
Caroline Jones, 47, of Harpenden, shot to fame on social media last year for her ‘Knickers Model’s Own’ campaign in aid of Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
The frugal fashionista posted a photo every day during 2015 wearing only second hand clothes in memory of her mother, Mary Benson, who used to volunteer at the CRUK charity shop in Harpenden.
The campaign, which met global success online, raised more than £50,000 for the charity.
Following on from 2015’s success, Caroline has penned a book about her journey and was photographed by portrait and fashion photographer Rankin for the cover.
Rankin, who was one of the founders of Dazed & Confused magazine, said: “It’s a fantastic part of my job to be able to meet such a variety people from all walks of life and hear their amazing stories.
“When I heard about Caroline’s campaign to raise funds for Cancer Research UK in memory of her mother, it really struck a chord with me - which is why I wanted to get involved and photograph her for the front cover of her book.
“I hope by adding my support, Caroline’s story will continue to raise awareness and vital funds to beat cancer sooner.”
Caroline originally launched the campaign with a fundraising target of £1,000. She posted on her JustGiving page at the time: “I love fashion. My mum, Mary, loved fashion. Together we went shopping, we talked style, we noted seasonal trends, we fell about laughing in mirrored changing rooms often dealing with a zip issue. Fashion was one of the many things that tied us together.
“Now there is no ‘we’. Cancer took my mum on the 24th October 2014, after the bravest of battles. ‘We’ has become ‘me’ and so I have decided to celebrate my mum’s life through the fashion lens, in a way I know she would have thoroughly enjoyed.”
The fundraising total is now £50,863 and Caroline has met national acclaim with numerous awards and press coverage.
She said of her photoshoot with Rankin: “To be photographed by Rankin was an incredible moment, it shows remarkable generosity and kindness. I continue to pinch myself.”
Knickers Model’s Own, a year of frugal fashion is priced at £20.
The book will be released on May 25, with all proceeds going to CRUK. It is available to pre-order here: www.cruk.org/knickersmodelsown
