Residents in St Albans are so keen to have their say on whether the UK should remain in or leave the European Union that many have unwittingly registered twice to vote.

People have until midnight on Tuesday, June 7, to register – giving locals aged 18 and over less than three weeks to secure their vote and take part in the June 23 referendum, if they have not already done so.

However Michael Lovelady, counting officer for St Albans district council warned: “We are receiving a high number of duplicate registrations because people are very keen to vote in the EU Referendum.”

The reason for the doubling up is that people may not be aware that anyone who was registered to vote by the April 18 deadline for the district council elections on May 5 will be registered to vote at the EU referendum.

Michael said that those who were already on the electoral roll for their current address, had no need to re-register for the referendum.

But if your home address has changed by the June 7 deadline, you will need to re-register at your new property.

All eligible voters will be sent a poll card shortly and if you do not receive one, you can check your registration by calling the authority on 01727 819294.

Michael said: “There is a great deal of interest in the EU Referendum, so people should make sure they are registered to vote by the June 7 deadline.”

• You can register online: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or obtain a paper copy by emailing the local electoral registration office: elections@stalbans.gov.uk

• Forms to apply to vote by post or proxy are available from the registration office or the Electoral Commission’s website: http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
