PUBLISHED: 10:02 07 March 2012

A WOMAN almost had her handbag snatched as she walked through an alleyway in St Albans this week.

The attempted theft happened between 4.45pm and 5pm, on Friday March 2, when the victim, a woman in her 30s, was walking through the alleyway near to Gombards.

She was approached by a man who asked her for a cigarette. The victim refused and the man then tried to take her bag.

The woman managed to hold on to it and the suspect ran off.

The man is described as Asian, aged in his early to mid-20s. He was wearing a red hat and a dark zip up jacket.

It is believed a number of people were in the area at the time and the investigating officer, PC Barry Eldridge, is asking anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact him.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Herts Police via non-emergency number 101 quoting crime reference number F1/12/743. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
