SIR, - I did not realise the market had been cancelled when I went to shop in St Albans last Wednesday morning. However, I can see how dangerous it would have been to put up the stalls because the concourse in front of the Old Town Hall was treacherous due to the extensive covering of ice. Therefore, from a pedestrian's point of view it was no encouragement to shop beyond this pavement - a double disappointment for the shopper and also lack of custom for shops on the opposite side of the road.

However, once having managed to risk life and limb into The Maltings, I found that one could safely walk there as the ice appeared to have been cleared away. I wonder why this was not the case in the market area?
