SIR, - It is very unfortunate that regardless of the strong cases presented locally the five local post office branches have been confirmed for closure. Many people will be seriously inconvenienced, particularly the elderly and disabled. Once again the interests of ordinary people are ignored.

My letter to the Herts Advertiser in late June made quite clear that these closures, as part of a 2,500-closure package, were because of EU Directives. While locally the Labour and Lib-Dem parties have been vocal in supporting the local offices, they have so far refused to acknowledge their parties' responsibility for what has happened because of their blind support of the EU - support which recently led them to reneging on their 2005 manifesto commitments for a referendum on the EU Constitution (Lisbon Treaty). Voters will not let them forget this when both the European Election (June 2009) and the General Election (2009/2010) are held.
