HUNDREDS of people turned out
in St Albans and Harpenden on
Sunday to remember those who
had died in the two world wars and
in more recent conflicts.
Remembrance Day services at the War
Memorials in both St Albans and Harpenden saw
the largest crowds for years.
Veterans groups were joined by youth organisations.
In St Albans where the Vicar of St Peter’s, the
Rev David Brentnall, conducted the service, the
act of remembrance was led by the Mayor, Cllr
Alison Steer, and music was provided by the St
Albans Salvation Army band.
Those laying wreaths included representatives
of the Royal Navy Reserve, Territorial Army and
the Cadet Forces, as well as the veterans organisations.
The ceremony was organised jointly by St
Albans District Council and the Royal British
Legion.
In Harpenden about 500 people attended the
service at the War Memorial on Church Green.
Jim Wade, who has organised the event for the
past 37 years, said: “I don’t think I can remember
a larger turnout. It was particularly pleasing
to see so many young people taking part.”
He added: “I think part of the reason
we saw so many people was because of
the effects of the present conflicts in
Iraq and Afghanistan.”
