NEW security measures have been introduced after thieves stole computer equipment worth more than £100,000 from the BT telephone exchange in St Albans.

Police say the raiders used a ladder to get through a first-floor window into the building in Liverpool Road.

They then went to the fourth floor where three laptop computers worth around £1,000 each were stolen before they took a large computer worth £100,000.

They also took computer chips and other components.

Police said it was not clear how the thieves left the building.

A spokesperson for BT confirmed that the raid had taken place. He said: "We have carried out a full review of our security at Liverpool Road following the incident and have upgraded our security procedures as a result."

The raid did not affect any BT phone services.
