A former editor of Archant newspaper The Herts Advertiser was killed last week after being struck by a 100mph inter-city express train.

Donald Smith, 70, of Purwell, Hitchin, was also an historical enthusiast who would give guided tours of his Purwell Mill home and lectures of the Roman occupation of Hitchin during is retirement

Travellers waiting on a station platform watched horrified as he stepped in front of a 100mph express train at Stevenage Station on Friday morning at 10.30.

The train took a mile to stop.

The express was finally allowed to continue its journey to King's Cross after the drivers was seen by a paramedic.

BTP say they have launched an inquiry into Mr Smith's dearth. He was editor of the Advertiser from 1979-82.
