Hi Donna
I was interested in your post - mainly because you mention Horace Oughton as having married into your family. I am up against a brick wall with one Horace Oughton. My Horace was born in 1801 and died aged 39 in 1840 in Terrington. So it is all in the correct area and it is very possible my Horace was born in Walpole.
I think Horace Oughton is a fairly unusual name and if there are two (and I think there are) then there must be some connection between them.
Can you help at all ??
Kind regards

Hi,
I can help with your question as my great-grandfather was, I believe, one of the Horace Oughtons you have been tracing. My cousin has completed lengthy research into the Oughton family tree in the Wisbech area and has discovered the following. The tree starts with William Oughton (b1740)who married Margaret Clarke ( b1741). Their third son was called John Oughton ( b1767) who married Susannah Hook (b1770). They had one son called William (b1795) who married Margaret and produced one child, Horace Oughton (b1800, d1840). This Horace married Maria Bailey (b1804,d1863), who is, I presume, the Horace Oughton mentioned in Donna's blog (my cousin's research does go a little further down this line but in less detail). John Oughton was then married for a second time to Mary Smith (b1770) and they had several children. One of these was also called John Oughton (b1810, d1883) who married Mary Ann Smith (b1808,d1885). They had a son whose name appears in the Census as 'Orris' -this was probably the name written by the clerk interpreting the verbally given name 'Horace', since that was the name he was known by! This Horace Oughton was born in 1844 and married Susan Ingram (b1846) and is the branch I am decended from.
It's complicated by the fact that the family names of Horace, John and William seem to appear in all the generations! Hope this helps.

Further to my previous post, I have looked again at the family tree and notice that the dates for the Horace Oughton who married Maria Bailey cannot be correct, they appear to be duplicated from a previous 'Horace Oughton' entry in the tree, something that the Excel programme (used in preparing the tree) does automatically when it recognises an entry. There is no reason to suggest the names are not correct but I do not have the correct dates. Whatever the case, it seems that all the Horace Oughtons in the tree are descendants from William Oughton and Margaret Clarke who married in the 1700s!
