I understand that you have a photograph of our Class and would appreciate it if you would send me a copy.
On leaving School I started work with Lloyds Insurance Brokers travelling upto London by steam train from Hatfield with Colin Blunstone prior to him being involved as the lead singer with The Zombies. He still perfoms as a solo artist.
I was married in Hatfield in 1966 and you may recall Roger Fisher from school who was our Best Man.
We moved to Sawbridgeworth living opposite what is now Beckingham Palace where David Beckham occasional lives before moving to Bishops Stortford and finally to Steeple Bumpstead in Suffolk.
We had 2 sons and now have 3 granddaughters and a grandson which gets very expensive at Christmas.
I still work 4 days a week with a local Insurance Broker and still enjoy work.
Names I recall from School:
Victor Meech who died some 15 years ago, Martin Forder Lionel Dodge Christopher Harrison Maureen McLaughlin Diane Nightingale Martin Figg, Colin Ellis, Valerie Newton Margaret Mardell, Alan Sann, Susan Mack, Lorraine ? William Holmes Ian Fleming Gillian Hart Pat Bilton Shiela Petch Peter Kerrison. Carol Maynard Stanley Braybrook Joan Wren Michael Chambers Graham Brewerton Roger Fisher Paul Griggs more will come to me later.
I have attended 2 reunions at the School the last one being about 15 years ago and Kilbey Edwards, Miss Britton Don Mackean and Miss Fletcher all attended.
We have a sinking fund to travel to Australia which will happen within the next 2 years.
Perhaps you would reply to me on email address coulsal5@aol.com and look forward to hearing from you.
I thought you would like to know that last week I went out for a drink with Brian Winter and our old science teacher Don McKean. Brian and Don meet up each week, a tradition that goes back many years. Don is in his eighties but is fit and well and has good memories of the early days of the High School and it was really good to see him. The only other member of staff he keeps in contact with is Hugh Croydon who lives in Welwyn, who I occasionally bump into.
I hope all the ex. high schoolers who read this are well and it would be good to see a few new names emerging.
Hola Paul ... I ws delighted to hear that Don McKean was still alive and kicking. He along with Mr Bull (History Teacher) were by far my "favourites". I can well remember the start of the Biology lesson which was to feature "the birds and bees". He gave us a disclaimer that whatever happened to us in later life was no fault of his!!!!
Take care Sue
PS do you ever hear from Mike Searle your skiffle partner??
Hola Alan it was very interesting to see all the people you could remember glad I was among them. You listed a Lorraine ?? can fill this one in for you it was Lorraine Rowland.
Take care best wishes Sue Mack
Can we know where they meet for the weekly 'tradition'. I'm very occasionally in the area and would love to join them. And can we know Hugh Croydon's contact. I was in two of the schoold plays he produced and still have copies of the event from the "Welwyn Times".

Hello Susan and all the other old school 'chums' that read this. Like Paul I often bump into Brian and know he still gets to the pub with Don McKean. I am in close contact with Karen Harris but unfortunately my other dear friend Gill Hart passed away last October. I have also seen Christine Allen and Maureen Allen who were both on the same day trip in May to Gloucestershire with the retired staff of GSK (SKF). I really must check this website more often! All the Best....Kay (Drury)
I have to introduce things this way as we are all getting on in years!!
The postings on this site seem fairly quiet now - it would be nice to hear from more ex students from the High School, I for example, would love to know whatever became of my small group - David Irving, Christopher Harrison, Lionel Dodge and Martin Forder.
On another subject, I have just finished reading a book about the history of Panshanger Airfield - does anyone remember the accident in March 1959 when a plane came across the school very low and crashed into trees - the teachers including Mr Windlass ran out with extinguishes and fire blankets but to no avail - the poor man died!!
Anyway on that cheerful note, Happy Christmas to all!!!

Re: The High School, Welwyn Garden City
Hi Susan,
I attended the High School from 1961-1964. They were memorable years. I had returned from Australia and missed a whole year's schooling when I joined the High School. I went fro 2nd year (australia) into 4th year.
I still managed to get 9 'O' Levels.
I can remember quite clearly the cross-country runs. There was a huge tree some 200m down the road, and we used to hide behind it, wait for all the keen ones to run the course and fit into the pack on their return.
Hi Alan
What a surprise Don Gardiner sent me. I did not know this existed.
Yes we were together from year 2 and rember you well. Was you in the football team?
Your name as well as Pauls and Dons remaind with me and I often wondered what happened to you all.
Unfortunatel I could not make the reunion which has been a major disappointment in my life.
Gladly through Don I am reaching many whom joined us in 1956at heronswood for six months before going to a windy new school on top of Panshanger.
My family still live in WGC after 75 years and my cousin always lets me know of High School news.
Please get in touch
Best Wishes
Colin
Hi Paul
What alovely surprise Don Gardiner sent me. I did not know this site existed.
Well we must go back 53 years when as 11 yr olds we were bought to heronswood to start a new school. Both in Scarlet and blue striped blazers and red hats with a blue ring, wondering why we looked like Zebras.
It was not long after we started that you fell ill, and I remeber cycling from Howlands down Ascot lane to Hyde Green to you r house at the weekends to see you. I was always welcomed by your parents and you sat up in bed stringing a guitar your family bought to pass the long days from school. I remember your love of lonnie Donegan and feel sure that you were taken tosee him at the Palladium where you were taken back stage to met your idol.
Sadlywe parted as time went on but I do remeber you leading a group at a school dance.
my mother was one of your greatest fans and moving back to Welwyn always told me about you from the local and media news.
Like you I am coming up to that magic figure, having had a wonderful life travelling around the world, working in engineering and a lovely family.
We are now based in Ascot berks and would love to hear from you and all the fellow students.
I remember Williams, Hill (longcroft Lane who always had long steps in cross country) Dave Parry, Tony Mowbray Colin Hurst ( whom lived near me at Buntingford in 70s) Ian Fletcher, David Grimshaw, Alan Coulson , Don Gardiner.
Also Mr Gilbey (whom tragically committed suicide) Ass Head Miss Fletch whom taught Geographt and Maths, Mr Hills ( whom spoke French at school and Home in Howlands), Mr James (latin) Mr Mckenzie on Sciences andoff course Mr Edwards ( Sports and Welsh Amateur International footballer)
Mr Gilbey ran a very tight shipp in those early days and everyone wore cloaks and boaters
Well please get in touch I would love to hear from you and perhaps somebody may a Wrinklies High School for those that do not have Zimmer frames yet
Best Wishes
Colin Ellis
