Alexander Cooper B:1927 Edmonton D: abt 1954 in a motorbike accident
Hi, I am researching my family tree and am very stuck on my fathers, fathers side.
All I know is that my great grandmother was a Romany Gypsy and she married Alfred Cooper in Edmonton.
Now I have a marriage certificate for a Phyllis Jones B: abt 1903 and an Alfred Cooper B: abt 1900 and am pretty sure that this is them, although my dad seems to remember her being known by another name, possibly Mary? If this is the right marriage then her father was called Solomon and there was also a Sirina Jones on the certificate as a witness, so possibly her mother or sister?
They had a son called Alexander Cooper B: 1927 and died in a motorbike accident abt 1954, my dad thinks that there was another Cooper son Raymond? and that he now possibly lives in WGC. Alexander married May Dorothy Ross in Edmonton and had 3 sons, Alexander Cooper, Michael Cooper (my dad born in Austria) and Charles (Charlie) Cooper
My great nan died around 1972, had a full gypsy funeral and left her horse drawn caravan to my dad, the caravan was never collected and was left in a pub grounds for many years, I have no idea as to which pub or where, but assume it must have been in the Edmonton area?
If there is anyone out there that can help me with filling in my Cooper background or that remembers anything about the gypsy caravan I would be ever so grateful.

Hi, have you checked on the net the Romany Gypsy pages? www.Romanygenes.webden.co.uk there are many links to other sites, lots of other inforation as well.
Another place to look is the local papers most libraries have local newspaper archives, for more information on the accident as i would have expected an inquest to be held.
It is common for Romany Gypsies to use various alias. Also it would have been in keeping with tradition to burn the Vardo rather than pass it on.
Hope you have some luck there are some very knowledgeable people on the above web page.

Many thanks for your reply.
It was strange that the wagon was left, as I do understand that the norm is to burn it.........apparently my dad was the image of his dad (her son that died) and this was the reason for it.
I have tried the web site you suggested, but as yet with no luck. Maybe I will try again, and when I am back in the UK visiting, I will, if I have time to, search out the local archived papers of the time.
