Re: am looking for anyone with the surname shadbolt
The only Shadbolts that I remember were from the 1950s. Mr and Mrs Shadbolt kept "How Wood Stores" in Bricket Wood. Mrs. Shadbolt also worked for H. E. "Harold " Coleman, the butcher on Holywell Hill on the left hand side just before Clark's the Bakers and the entrance to Sumpter Yard. Any help?
Re: am looking for anyone with the surname shadbolt
The Shadbolts are my mother's family - they're supposed to have originated in Hertfordshire, and owned a manor in the 1500s (the name was possibly originally Shotbolt). A lot of them went out to New Zealand and author Maurice Shadbolt is one of them. My grandmother, who was born Shadbolt, grew up in Blackheath in London.
Re: am looking for anyone with the surname shadbolt
Not sure if it will help but I used to work with a man last name of Shadbolt in the early 70s (72/73) not sure of his first name but he had to be in his late 50s early 60s then, We worked at K&L Steel Foundry, he used to keep track of employees hours for the payroll department. Good luck.

Re: am looking for anyone with the surname shadbolt
Hi Claire. I hope you are still interested in this. I am in the process of compiling my family tree. My mother was a member of the Tewin branch of the Shadbolt family. There are many branches throughout Hertfordshire, but my one was mainly based around Tewin going back to the 18th century, and then all the way back to the 16th century. It is possible as one of the previous correspondents from New Zealand stated, (incidentally, they are descended from a convict who was send to a penal colony in Australia in the 19th century) that we are descended from the Shotbolts of Ardley, but this has not yet been proven. If it was true then there is a connection with the Dukes of Marlbororough, and of course the Churchills. Not to mention the late Princess Diana. but as I say, there is no real proof of this.
It is possible that you are closely related to the Tewin bunch and it would be interesting to prove it if I can. Can you tell me your grandfather's first name? And possibly his father's? Also maybe where they were born or lived. I have photographs of a few Shadbolts, including my great grandparents (who had eleven children, one of whome also had 10 children)). And if you are related in any way then I will give you access to them and my family tree.

Re: am looking for anyone with the surname shadbolt
Hi Amanda, A "Shadbolt" (familyname) was at the Boys County Gammar School in Brampton Road , Fleetville. He would be about 75 years old now. I played rugby for Old Verulamians back in season 1954/55 and 55/56. He was 1st XV Skipper and played Fly Half. His nick name was "Shagger" and he was a very popular team member. Try Veralum school records or in desparation the Rugby Club which is still going strong. Best wishes in your search.
