I am researching the above families in the St. Albans / Hatfield areas of Hertfordshire, particularly:

Bassill at Hatfield  / Cromer Hyde / Symondshyde - from 16th C

Moreton at Colney Heath and St Albans - 19th C

Wethereds in and around St Michaels parish, St. Albans - 17th C

(and from the Wethereds, the Hawards / Haywards / Heywards etc, probably from Redbourn)

Cripps at Hatfield  / Cromer Hyde - 17th C

If you are also interested in these families and have info to swap, then please get in touch.

Hi Peter

I have been researching my family tree which includes a number of Bassills from the Harpenden area.  I have recently been told that they are directly decended from a Bassill family living in Cromerhyde - I have no direct evidence to show this yet but happy to share the information I have.

In Hatfield library there is a copy of “Hatfield and its People.” Part 11b “Families and Trades” pages 55-60 contains a brief description of the Bassills of Cromer Hyde including a family tree from the 16th century, William and Symon to the end of the 19th century.  I am particularly interested in the tree from then to the mid 20th century especially those living in Hatfield.  Best wishes in your search
